Richmond, 20 minutes drive north-east of Hobart, is the oldest historic town in Tasmania. Outlying properties around Richmond township are rural and vary in size from small acreages to large farms.

New Norfolk, in the Derwent Valley, is approximately 35 minutes drive from Hobart. It has a decent sized shopping centre and a distinctly English character with some of the oldest homes in Australia. Until relatively recent times, the area was dominated by the hop-growing industry and New Norfolk still produces hops on a large scale. Now the Norske Skog paper mill at Boyer contributes significantly to the local economy.

Situated an 18-20 minute drive south of Hobart through Kingston and on the way to Kettering (from where the Bruny Island Ferry leaves), Coningham is a waterfront area on the D'entrecasteaux Channel. Offering bush blocks or waterfront 'get-away' cottages, it is a relaxed living area with several close fruit & vegetable stands offering organic produce.

Located in the Kingborough Municipality, Bruny Island is approximately 30 minutes south of Hobart. It is only accessible by the ferry from Kettering, with about 9 crossings per day. Many Hobartians have weekend and holiday homes on Bruny Island and there are numerous B&Bs, a camping area, some small shops and various tourist attractions.
