Hobart is Tasmania's State capital, founded in 1804 as a penal colony,  and is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney. It is the largest city in the State, the population of the greater Hobart area being approx. 245,000. Wandering around the city centre and waterfront on foot allows visitors to take in the classic architecture (eg Parliament House and the Theatre Royal) and one of the world's finest deepwater ports.
